I've been a fan of vampire fiction since I first discovered Anne Rice in high school. Since then, I've read vampire fiction of all kinds. I've devoured vampire romance (which was... interesting, to say the least), and enjoyed the YA dark fantasy that has been flooding the teen section of my local bookstore since Twilight first found fame.
I like most of what I read, but it's all different. From the angst of Twilight to the monsters of 13 Bullets, the epic storytelling of The Passage to the quirkiness of the Sookie Stackhouse books, every author has a different idea of how vampire fiction ought to be.
At first I wasn't sure whether I was going to like To Walk the Night, honestly. It was published by a Christian publisher, and I was worried that it would get preachy. Preachy and vampire fiction don't go together.
Not only was that not the case, though, but the book was pretty good. It was a fairly straightforward plot line, but it worked well. Vampire hunting other vampires is always good fun, especially when there is a motive of vengeance. The book also set things up pretty well for a sequel, and likely an entire series (and setting the series up might have been partly why the story in this one was a bit on the short side). It's not as good as some of the others I've read -- I actually prefer vampires who don't angst over what they are -- but it held its own pretty well.
All in all, it was good escapist fiction, and I will be looking forward to the next book when it comes out later this year!
