If you think the title and the cover of Hunt at the Well of Eternity hearkens back to a somewhat antiquated genre, you're right. This book is the first in a series of six, intended to bring back the pulp adventure genre.
Just like the old pulp adventure novels, the book is a fun, quick read. It has a rich hero, sexy women, car chases, and a scholarly aspect. Think James Bond meets Indiana Jones and you've about got it.
Also like the old pulp adventure novels, the author doesn't really exist. To my knowledge, each book is written by a different author, like with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. The titles all sound like what you'd expect from a Tarzan-era series: Hunt at World's End, Hunt Beyond the Frozen Fire, and so on.
The book was everything I expected and hoped. It's not groundbreaking fiction, but it IS fun. It's a good sort of book to read if you want something you will get through quickly and that won't require a lot of deep thought. I also thought the tone of the book stayed true to the expectations set up by the title and cover -- it had that quaint retro feel of the kind of thing I used to read as a kid, but haven't read for a long time.
Do note that if you want to read these books, you might want to get them soon: The publisher, Dorcester, is supposedly going out of business very soon, perhaps by the end of the month. If you wait too long, you might be able to find used copies or remainders, of course, but ebooks won't be available anymore once the publisher shuts down!
